Chinese people living in Christchurch celebrated the 70th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) by gathering to watch the latest popular patriotic film “My People, My Country” on Tuesday at a downtown cinema.
Holding national flags, more than 200 Chinese people, as well as a number of New Zealanders, sang “Me and My Motherland” as well as national anthems of both China and New Zealand, before the screening of the film by director Chen Kaige in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island.
Chinese Consul General in Christchurch Wang Zhijian told the crowd at the film’s premiere that Chinese people in New Zealand can watch the film simultaneously with audience back in China, which depicted the shard memory of the nation.
Lianne Dalziel, mayor of Christchurch, said the marking of the important anniversary of the PRC will also mark an important point of the relationship between Christchurch and China as well.
